Sweet Adeleine was no witch | A shy farm girl, Adeleine lived alone after losing her parents to cholera, folks oft wondered how she avoided their fate. She grew vegetables, fruits, and herbs, often sharing with neighbors who claimed her herbal teas were beneficial to their health; never did she eat any breathing being. Cats and wildlife were her constant companions. As these stories go, a witch hunter came and pointed a crooked finger at the lass. "Off with her head," the shriveled stranger cried. Most resisted, but a superstitious widow believed him and swung his axe at her neck. Now flickering lamp light, feline caterwauling, and a cool breeze accompany glimpses of a figure searching the fields for her head.
